The Story Behind
Kraken Rack Monitor
Kraken Rack Monitor started with a simple problem: not knowing whether my rack was secure.
Last fall I bought a vacuum-mounted SeaSucker bike rack so I could transport my bike without installing permanent racks on my Mustang. It worked great, but every drive came with anxiety from not knowing if the mounts were still secure. The first time I used it, I even had a friend drive behind me the entire trip, just in case.
Vacuum-mounted racks rely entirely on maintaining pressure. Even a slow, unnoticed pressure loss can turn a good setup into a risky one. And while the rack itself gives visual indicators, you can’t see them while you’re driving.
So I built a solution for myself.
I created a small monitoring system that continuously checks the pressure in each vacuum mount and shows their status on my phone. If a mount loses pressure, I’m alerted immediately, giving me the chance to stop and fix it before it becomes a problem.
With this in place, the rack finally felt complete. Driving was a noticeably better experience when I knew the rack was secure.
I then shared a video of my prototype on Reddit, and the response surprised me.
A lot of people wanted one for their own racks. That feedback pushed me to refine the design, file for a patent, and turn my personal project into a product others could use.
Kraken Rack Monitor is the result. I build each unit myself, and it’s designed to give you the same peace of mind it gives me.
